Jack Townsend, 86, a native of Birmingham, AL, and a resident of Mobile, AL, passed away on April 4, 2017, at his home surrounded by loved ones.He served as an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in England where he met his beloved wife Rita. She followed him to Birmingham in 1953, and they wed shortly thereafter. Together, they raised three children-Janet, Scott, and Steven. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute which later became, Auburn University. He was an ardent fan and loved working the sidelines at football games. He finished his service in the Air Force and later joined the National Guard. His civilian career began at Hayes International where he remained for 18 years before he worked for and retired from Southern Company Services after 15 years of service. After retiring in 1986, he enjoyed spending time with family, golfing, gardening, tinkering on projects around the house, and cooking. His specialty was making preserves with fruit from his numerous fruit trees. Jack never met a stranger, and was perpetually cheerful. His friends referred to him as "Mr. Wonderful" since every time anyone asked how he was doing, he responded, "wonderful!" He loved to brag about his grandchildren and was quick to tell people, "If you like 'em perfect, you'll love mine!"
He is preceded in death by his parents Mack Townsend, Sr. and Bess Townsend, his brothers MSTSGT Mack Townsend, Jr., US Army, Ret.(Lorraine) of Midfield, Alabama. and Earl Townsend of Birmingham, Alabama, and his sister Joy Hester (Marvin Hester Jr.) of Montgomery, Alabama. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Rita Townsend; daughter Janet Dlugos (CDR Stephen, USN, Ret) of Hampton, Virginia.; two sons, Scott Townsend (Cheryl Smith) of Martinez, Georgia., and Steven Townsend (Creath Edens) of Mobile, Alabama. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Jason Dlugos, Capt. Jarrod Dlugos, USMC, Mary Katherine Dlugos, Amanda Townsend Mills (John), Austen Townsend, Taylor Townsend, Russell Townsend, Robert Townsend, Kyndel Edens, Evelyne Edens, and Chase Edens; and one great-grandson, Jack Mills. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Townsend (Barbara) of Hoover, Alabama, and his sister, Vicki Holcomb of Birmingham, Alabama. He loved his family dearly. He was sunshine in our lives, and we will miss him immensely. The family would like to thank Touching Hearts Senior Care and St. Joseph Hospice.
